How to check your town's rules

Your city isn't on our list yet? Here's how to find the official answer in about five minutes.

  1. Know your vehicle's category

Check the label or the manual for the class (1, 2 or 3), the motor wattage and the top assisted speed. For a golf cart, check whether it has a VIN and FMVSS 500 certification, which would make it an LSV. See vehicle types.

  2. Read your state's baseline

Start with your state DMV or DOT page on e-bikes or "micromobility." Our state summaries link to the official pages for six states.

  3. Search your city or county code

Most cities publish their codes on Municode, American Legal (codelibrary.amlegal.com) or eCode360. Search for "bicycle," "sidewalk," "motorized scooter," "electric bicycle" and "golf cart."

  4. Check who runs the path or park

Trails, greenways and parks often have their own rules. A trail might be run by a city parks department, a county, a state agency or a nonprofit, and each sets its own e-bike rules.

  5. Follow posted signs and confirm

Posted signs are enforceable. If you're still not sure, call your city's transportation department or the police non-emergency line. Private land and HOAs can set stricter rules.
